Setting Priorities

Even as a kid I lamented how there was just not enough time in the day. My Second Grade schoolteacher Mrs. Canady had commented to my mother,

“The hardest thing for Nolan will be to choose what he wants to do.”

Truer words have never been spoken about me. And its not because like many people I hate what I do and I just want to quit doing, it is in fact the exact opposite. I love doing so many things I am always trying to do as much as I can.

My new goal is to become a modern renaissance man.

But with that said, I still need to pick a career. Something that I can stick with and bring in reliable income of which I also enjoy. Over the past year especially I bounced from job to job testing out which I would enjoy the most. I went from working in internet entertainment, to on political campaigns, to auto sales, the moving & storage industry, as well as a brief foray into insurance that quickly led me to the realization that if I was going to go back into sales I might as well do it in real estate.

The thing that I love most is meeting people,

and especially being able to make a personal connection. If I was selling insurance it would be a more auto-sales type of job where the customer comes in but is out of the office before the end of the day. I wanted something a little more than that. Where my interactions were a little deeper.

What better than real estate? I get to meet all types of people from all over and get to know them over a decent enough length of time. Couple that with being able to sell them a product that they will be excited with and the ability to make a good living?

Count me in.

So after passing my Real Estate Exam two weeks ago I decided that I really need to get my priorities straight. Real Estate can be an absolutely great career for me, but it is not something that will just fall into my lap. There is intense competition between hundreds of other local agents and thousands of regional ones. How I am going to make it such that that a potential buyer or seller chooses to work with me over another agent?

In short, I need to get myself out there.

And that starts with getting outside of my apartment. No one is going to meet me and I won’t have that chance to strike up a conversation with a potential buyer or seller if I never get outside into the public eye. Further, now is the time to work. I am just starting out. Sure, maybe down the line I can take my foot off of the gas and relax a little bit, but surely not now.

Right now I need to work hard, and further, I need to work smart.

If there is another lesson I have learned recently, it’s that you might have the right intention, but maybe you are not going about it the right way. You have to think about how you can make something work out in a way that actually is going to be effective. Sure there are many different roads and methods that might get me leads, etc. but I need to make sure that they work with me and are something sustainable.

One thing I have thought a lot about is the usage of social media. Today many people are all about social media selling, e.g. posting on facebook, instagram, etc., but to be honest with you,

I really do despise social media.

Mainly because I believe that it is a lot of work that really does not bring about a huge yield. Over much social media usage on my twitch stream I felt that it did not bring that many additional viewers to my show. And worst off it was a lot of work for me. It felt very inefficient. But it did really help me notice my strengths. Many times my new viewers were people that I met in real life, or those that I struck up a conversation with in game. Anyone that had a more personal connection to me was much more interested in me and the chance of them coming into my stream was so much higher than that of the people browsing my instagram posts, etc.

I fully understand that my best strength is meeting people in real life.

And this is because I truly love people. I naturally talk to the person in line next to me, the person walking to their car in the parking lot, every cashier I meet, every barista, almost every single person that I come in to contact with.

And I love doing this.

It’s why I came back from Oregon. To be around and be with people. So to me instagram, facebook, and other social media websites are just shallow attempts at what I naturally enjoy doing face to face. I would rather just opt out of that and stick to what I do best.

Now of course I understand that social media is the standard today so I have been working on my profiles and getting them set up so that people can view me and reach out, but as for active daily content on them I am not interested. I will use them to the level that I feel is standard for work, but past that no dice.

I have my other ideas about how I will get my work done.

Just watch, I am going to get out there like never before. Even though I have my own place now, I am hardly going to be there. If you want to catch me, find me at Yoga Classes, Toastmasters functions, Chess meetups, Coffee Shops, and much more. I even have a couple secret hare-brained ideas up my sleeve for how I am going to get some new  leads.

And I tell you, most people who hear them will surely tell me that they ate stupid and won’t work, but trust me I know they will.

So now it is time for me to set my priorities and focus on my real estate career as number one. Further, my plans are to set the vast majority of my activities to be things that can also help towards my real estate career in some way. My goal is to use my time in the most efficient way I can, and that starts with being social.

And in the flesh. Not on the keyboard.

Thoughts on the Smollett Case

So as you all know, right now Empire star Jussie Smollett is getting a lot of attention. And that is certainly understatement. Recently, the star was the subject of a supposed racist and homophobic attack in which he was beaten, called a n*gger, and afterwards was forcibly dressed with a noose around his neck.

The story immediately sparked outrage.

Well as we all know by now, the act was a hoax orchestrated by the actor himself. The people that supposedly assaulted him were paid to be a part of it, and now the whole thing is unfolding rapidly. The actor reportedly was not happy with the amount he was being paid, and so he decided to make himself so relevant that he would likely be paid considerably well.

I think Jussie was a sort of genius. He almost got away with it.

He realized that given today’s political climate, and with the speed at which the internet operates, he realized that he could orchestrate the quote on quote “perfect crime.” Stage an attack in such a manner that no one could speak out against it and its veracity, and in fact that is exactly what happened.

Almost no one spoke out doubting whether the attack was credible. Many politicians and people came to his side and were outraged demanding for more calls to action. Imagine if there were politicians that would have stood up and asked whether it was true or not? Oh my God, they likely would have been crucified in that moment. How dare they doubt this man’s story? Would be because they might be secretly racist? Or homophobic? No, No, No. No politician, celebrity, anyone worth their smarts would risk expressing their concerns and thus risk social and political suicide.

So, everyone just accepted that it happened.

It was the perfect crime. Until that it is the story started to fall apart, and here we are with Jussie Smollett in jail. The media that so voraciously covered the story as a hate-crime, an outrage, and etc. is in total damage control trying to hide the fact that they didn’t even bother to check facts. And this is why I think Jussie really is a sort of mad genius.

What he did was wrong, but this doesn’t take away from his intelligence.

As I have recently gotten into chess I cannot help but use the comparison and say that Jussie was a sort of mad chess master. Yes, his end goal is to trick the public and deceive, but by God he did it such a way that you have to sit back and be impressed.

He saw that given the current political climate and his position as an openly gay black man he could trick the public in such a way that no one would doubt him. His mistake was that he didn’t orchestrate the hoax in a better manner, unfortunately for him the men that he paid to stage the attack confessed to the hoax while being detained.

Jussie may have been able to fool the mass media, and the general public, but he was not so lucky when it came to the Chicago PD. Had he planned it better such that surveillance footage didn’t lead police to the men who he paid to stage the attack, we would have never known what truly happened and likely next season of Empire would be bigger than ever and so would his pockets be as well.

He almost got away it.

But this whole ordeal really has made me think about the current state of American society. And it is not in a good place. We as a nation were founded upon the principle of being innocent until proven guilty and that things need to be verified before they are accepted as true. Jussie’s hoax shines a light that currently we are so politically charged the media and the general public want to believe what they want to believe. Too quickly today do we rush to believe or doubt someone just because we don’t like them; either because of their race, gender, wealth, etc. and this is not right. The facts need to speak for themselves, and we need to start looking at them.

Thankfully Chicago PD did.

Not only was justice done, and this hoax was revealed, but the Chicago Police Department did us a nation huge favor. They revealed to us how clearly biased and slanted our modern society is. Some things cannot be doubted given our current climate, lest people ruin their careers, and thus knowing that Jussie exploited the ecosystem.

This serves as a check that when things happen we need to have people step back and look at the events and then wait until the findings present themselves before a conclusion is made. It is so terrible that people judge others and that conclusions are made before any facts are shown to see whether something happened or not. I believe that people should not need an alibi to go about their daily life. If someone makes an accusation they need to have serious proof that it happened. No matter how grievous. Sadly will some people get away with crimes because there is no evidence? Yes. But the alternative is much worse. Where people are jailed, or their image ruined simply because someone made a claim that cannot be substantiated. We need to guard against this type of mob behavior. After all, there are more college graduates amongst American citizens than ever. We are the most supposedly educated population America has ever seen.

Then how the hell do we fall for these things so easily?

It’s because people do not want to look at the facts. They want to have their world views validated, and they will not doubt anything that correlates with their views. Conversely they will doubt anything that is contrary to them. The Jussie Smollett case shows this. We need to settle down, look at every case as it happens and see if there is evidence. No matter if it is a hot-button issue such as race, or homophobia, or rape, etc. We need to look at the facts and that is the bottom line.

If people are proven guilty, then it is time for them to deserve their just punishment. If merely accusations are made, I am sorry but that is not enough. Anyone can accuse anyone of anything. That doesn’t make it true.

But, facts don’t lie. And that is what we need more of.

The Jussie Smollett case shows us that we need stop believing what we want to believe, and further we need to be able to sit back, be rational, look at the events that transpired, verify them, and then draw the proper conclusion: even if it something that we wish was not so.

Until next time, Keep Smiling,

Writing in Advance

address-adult-african-1061576For a while now I have been posting a blog each day, but often at different times. This is honestly a problem. I really need to make sure that I post a blog every day at the same time that way people know they can read it. Imagine if your newspaper showed up at a different time every day. You would not only stop reading it, you would likely cancel the subscription.

People need routine.

And I completely understand this, as I stream at the same time every night on my twitch show, however when it comes to my blog I have been incredibly lazy. Couple this with my inability some mornings to get up in a timely fashion and then voila you have the issue of me posting at random times. I mean honestly it’s going to be 5:50 or so most likely by the time this blog post is posted. And that is if I write it quick.

I need to get into a better writing routine and start posting every day ideally in the morning maybe around 8:30 or 9:00. Not sure which of the two times, but I will choose one soon. Now some mornings I get up and I am tired or I have to do something, should I just post later? No! What do I do then?

Write blogs in advance. I really cannot believe I didn’t think of doing this until now. And honestly I think it was because I liked the idea of getting up every single day and starting it off with writing a post. Yes, it is very poetic and sounds pleasant, but life happens and the days just do not always work out that way.

Take tomorrow for example, Niki and I are going snowboarding. How the hell am I going to write a post tomorrow at all? By the time I get back it is going to be time for my twitch show. Thus I knew I needed to write a post in advance. And this is how I got the idea. It’s like they say,

“necessity is the mother of invention.”

But then it got me thinking some more. Why don’t I do this more regularly? Often there are times when I am on a roll and there are so many things I am eager to write about. That is really when I should write about them. The moment I write down the idea to write about for a later date I have just doomed that blog post to being not nearly as good as it would be had I written it in that moment of inspiration.

And besides, then I wouldn’t have to worry so much about writer’s block.

That’s a real thing by the way. I can’t imagine the pressure for paid writers who have to churn articles out every day. What happens when they are stuck? Well, they are fucked! lol.

At least for me this blog is something that I am the complete boss of and while yes I understand writer’s block to a degree, because if I don’t post everyday then I will start to lose my following so it is necessary that I work at this, it isn’t quite the same as having my ass on the line.

But nonetheless, some days I know when I am writing a post that it is total filler and not at all as good as the last post or one of my previous ones. This is why I encourage everyone to take action and plan. Be smart about what might happen in the future and prepare yourself for. Do not just wait until the last second and then be caught off guard.

So today I am going to write another post immediately after this one, while I am inspired and while I have the time to do so. Then I will publish it tomorrow bright and early and ideally keep my training running from that moment on. So while tonight was a late read, rise and shine at 8:30 AM tomorrow or so and read my new post. It’s going to be a good one all.

Thanks again for reading and keep smiling,

Writing all Day

Today I had a sort of half day at work. Got up, took care of work and then I was get started on the projects I wanted to get on to. And man its time to write.

First, I just finished writing all my thank you letters to my fans as well as addressing their envelopes. So sorry to everyone that it took me this long to get to this. I really was slacking, but now I am back on it. I got a little bit disorganized for a bit there.

Jordan Peterson would be ashamed that I didn’t clean my room for a few days.

So sorry, getting that straightened today.

Now that I have the letters all taken care of I’m moving on to todays blog post. Getting this up right now as you read, and once this is done then I will be on to writing raps until the stream tonight.

Hell, with all the rapping I am doing I wonder if I should start writing a weekly article for the paper or something. I honestly think that I could fit it in, I’m already working in overdrive anyways. Besides, I like having no time to nothing but work.

A busy Nolan is a good Nolan.

I also have a hypothesis about my raps, as to why they have started to get much better, especially my free styling. I think all this writing is getting my brain working on another level and that it is remembering more words than I used to. I really don’t have any other explanation. It isn’t like I suddenly got a lot smarter and read a ton of books or something, I think the usage of more words on the daily has been increasing my brain’s mental bank.

I also think that it could be due to the fact that I listen to intensely to lyrics now whereas in the past I did not. That deserves a blog post in itself. When I was in high school I could care less about lyrics, but now it is almost all I care about. If the lyrics are super trash, I cannot listen to it. Now, by trash this does not exclude party rap or turn up music, just things that I find offensive or wrong: which is a wide variety of which many of you would be surprised to find what is and what is out.

Most likely, it’s not what you all would expect.

It was really funny the other day I was chatting with 80purppp and I told him my favorite lines from his songs and replied,

“you listen so well it’s scary.”

I fucking love that hahaha! And I think it is good to listen intensely to lyrics, especially if you are working on your own raps. You can get so much inspiration and technique from the people that you listen through absorption. When I really think about it, my flows summed up would be a mix of Too Short, Tyga, Big Sean, Pouya, G-Eazy, and most definitely Logic. His rapping has had a huge influence on mine. And it totally happened subconsciously. When I was listening to myself freestyle I thought,

“Oh shit I’m going logic mode right now!”

So I recently I started listening to a lot of Logic to study his rhymes so I could work on mine. And dude I fucking love logic’s new album. It’s an absolute masterpiece. But that is its own blog post.

Another rapper whose flows have snuck into my raps is Jay-Z. And dude, I am cool with that. HOV has such a classic sound. I just hope my sound doesn’t sound like a rip-off lol.

And two rappers I wish I could emulate would be Method Man and Mac Miller. Those two are just simply amazing. R.I.P. Mac.

Well, today’s post is a little short as I have even more writing to do, but tomorrow is going to make up for it because it is Sunday. This means it is not the day of rest, but the day of work when Top Shelf and I get in the studio and make a new track. But it’s the most fun work I do, so it’s like rest. I think God will be pleased.

Especially with the messages, the two of us are working very hard to keep our raps real and not full of bullshit.

Time to get at it and like Logic says GET IT DONE.

Keep Smiling,
