Sacrifices are Required

Today was without a doubt the best day of my streaming career. After streaming for over two and a half years, going through many ups and downs, and especially after moving to Los Angeles to pursue my passion, I had a breakthrough day. Today I set a new stream record for people watching my channel at 56 viewers in chat. For many people out there that number may seem very small, but for me, it is absolutely huge.

To have a day where I was entertaining over fifty people is a huge mark for me. Streaming is about growing your channel, and thus to have a day where I gained over 30 new followers and had over 50 people watch me at one time is a humongous improvement. I have to thank my channel and all those who stopped by today and took part in the stream.

But most importantly I have to thank myself.

I made many decisions and changed my stream and how I stream after twitchcon 2017. A few of those decisions included making my stream more unique and consistent. Thus why I wear my suit everyday (as opposed to very rarely in the past), why I stream over 40+ hours a week, and why I keep a serious schedule and absolutely stick to it. The schedule has been huge for my channel and I am proud of myself for really grinding these hours out and streaming so much.

Today my commitment was put to the test. It is currently Thanksgiving Week and my high school friends are in town for it. A good amount of us met up earlier today and it was great seeing them, but around 8:00 PM it came time to stream and I said my goodbye and I came back and went live.

Of course my friends were disappointed that I didn’t stay out with them, but I wouldn’t have had a good time if I hung out with them. Not because I wouldn’t have enjoyed their company, rather because I would know that I let down my stream and all the people that watched me today who told me that they were looking forward to seeing my come back on later tonight.

For this new era of my stream I have set the times of the week when I stream. And I stick to this. I ask people to follow my channel and to subscribe and tip me because I am committed to my channel and the entertainment that I provide. My stream is my job. I may not be profiting and living off of it, but it is my job and I treat it as such.

For the longest time I did not treat my stream seriously and for that reason my channel didn’t grow. Now I am running it a new way, and yes it is much more work, but it is proving to be worth it. I make sacrifices to stream just as everyone does in anything that is important to them (work, relationships, etc.), and while these can hurt, they are necessary. If you only put a little bit of effort into everything you will never build anything particular impressive. Only when you pour your soul into a few things, or one thing that you are passionate about can you make something great. Right now, the one thing I am passionate about is my stream, and I sacrifice other things so that I can devote myself to it.

Sitting here finishing this post at 12:40 in the morning, thinking about how my friends hung out all night but I stayed home and worked, I am glad I did. The old me would have easily rationalized taking the night off even though I had a show scheduled, and thus would have let down all the fans (i.e. the people who I live to do my show for) who were eagerly waiting for the show, but not the new me.

I am here, I am streaming, I am sacrificing, and thus I am committed.
